CURATORIAL STATEMENT

Making Room for you, making room for me,
making room for installation, sculpture, new media, performance, video,
drawing, painting, photography, making room for exchanging ideas,
fan mail, phone numbers, manifestos, making room for more.

Making Room Curatorial was founded in 2006 by artist / independent curator Heather Nicol for the production of the exhibition Making Room. She is interested in seizing underutilized or vacant space for the creation of short term, site-specific projects involving artists, performers and musicians.

In a fabulous 30,000 square foot warehouse space, Nicol curated and produced her inaugural Toronto project, makigROOM. It was a weekend long event featuring new site specific works by over 50 established and emerging artists. Coming together in an explosive artist driven spirit, these artists shared an ambition to work in the context of an amazing space, surely one of the largest rooms in Toronto outside of the CNE grounds. An off the grid exhibition that featured an array of artworks, performance and music, the works addressed notions of scale, architecture, gatherings, celebration and beauty.
